Normally when you go to an optician, they would take approximately one week to get your glasses ready. This is because your glasses would need to be sent to a lab to be made. Once it has been made it will then be sent back to the optician for you to collect.
At Specialeyes Eyecare optician in Shepherds Bush, we have a lab in our store in Shepherds Bush which means we can make your prescription glasses on the same day (in less than 15 minutes after your eyes examination). We can make most single vision prescriptions on the same day. If we do not have your lens in stock, we are able to order them and make them in store for you. This allows us to be more efficient and allows you to get your glasses at a faster time.
To be able to give you a faster service we have made partnerships with local lens manufacturing labs. This allows us to order custom-made lenses to a very high specification to suit your needs.
Once you have selected your frame that you would like, you would also have lens options that you can choose from. At our Shepherds Bush optician we have a wide range of lens options available to optimise optical performance for your everyday needs, including Bifocal, Varifocal, single vision distance and single vision reading lenses. We also have a wide range of lens coatings available.
If you spend a lot of time staring at a screen and want to protect your eyes and lenses, you may consider investing in some lens coatings. Lens coatings have the potential to significantly increase your visual performance. We offer a variety of coatings, including:
These lenses are thermally coated with an extra layer to prevent the lens from scratching thus making the lens more durable. This is applied on plastic lenses as plastic materials scratch more easily than glass.
Anti-reflection coatings are there to improve the clarity of your lenses by removing reflections from external light sources. All our antiglare lenses have hard coatings as well as hydrophobic properties.
An easy clean coating is an extra coating that is added on top of antiglare lenses and provides a superior level of scratch resistance and hydrophobic properties. Due to this, these lenses are easier to clean and have reduced smudging. They also come with a UV 400 coating. The benefit of having a UV coating is that it helps prevent conditions such as macular degeneration and cataracts as it blocks harmful rays from passing through the lens into your eye.
This lens is a superior antiglare lens which provides protection from blue light as well as green light. Our blue antiglare coating also includes easy clean and a UV 420 filter. This coating provides maximum protection from artificial lights. This lens is ideal for people who spend a long time on the computer or any screens.
The driving coating is a type of coating designed to improve driver safety in low-light settings such as rain, fog, and night driving. This lens offers UV 400 protection as well as a hydrophobic coating that makes it more resistant to scratches.
Here at Specialeyes Eyecare in Shepherds Bush, we have a wide variety of tinted lenses, both for those who need them to protect their eyes from the sun and for those who simply want a more fashionable look. Here are some of the lenses we have available:
These lenses can also be referred to as prescription sunglass lenses. This lens would be made in the colour you choose, and if both the lens and the colour you want are in stock, we might be able to have it made on the same day. You can also choose to have a graduated tint, which means that the top of the lens will be tinted darker than the rest of the lens, and the tint will get lighter as you move down the lens.
Mirror tints have an extra optical layer designed to reflect light. Because of the reflective coating, it appears like a mirror; thus, these sunglasses are also known as "mirrored sunglasses." They protect our eyes from glare and overly bright light during the day, which increases our visibility. In addition to this, the reflective coating that is applied to these lenses makes them resistant to scratching.
Polarised lenses are a special type of tinted lens which blocks all light that reflects horizontally. This in-turn would block most of the reflections that you see through your glasses. These lenses can be used to see-through water as they block most of the reflections. It is a lens that provides superior comfort to a normal tinted lens, and is recommended to those who are sensitive to sunlight or spend time near the water.
Transition signature 8 lenses are the latest and fastest ‘react to light’ (photochromic) lenses on the market. The lens works by reacting to the UV light that comes from the Sun. It comes in three colours as standard (Grey, Brown, Graphite green). They also come in custom colours (Emerald, Sapphire, Amethyst, Amber).
This lens utilises the TRANSITIONS® DRIVEWEAR® technology. It is a polarised lens which also transitions to a darker lens colour when exposed to sunlight. It is recommended for driving during the day or as an upgrade to standard polarised lenses. This lens only comes in the colour brown.
Due to car windscreens having a UV filter, conventional transition lenses do not react to sunlight as much when in the car. This is because transition lenses react to the UV light emitted from the Sun. Transitions XTRActive is a new generation of lenses which turn extra dark outdoors as well as reacting to sunlight inside the car. They are the darkest photochromic light intelligent lens in hot temperatures.

As the name implies, these are spectacles with no border around the lens. Wearing rimless glasses will give the impression that you are not wearing glasses at all. Rimless frames are a wonderful alternative if you need glasses but are concerned about how others would see them. They are extremely light and comfortable. Due to their design they require polycarbonate lenses, which are both sturdy and light.
Polycarbonate lenses have a 1.59 index, which makes them lighter and thinner than standard plastic lenses (1.50). They are also 10 times more impact-resistant than plastic or glass lenses and provide UV protection from the sun. These lenses are ideal for rimless and safety glasses due to their light weight, high level of comfort, and good impact resistance.
Our main aim to provide you the highest quality of lenses and we strive to make sure the quality you receive meets your expectations. Your eye health matters to us and we want to make your everyday spectacle use a little bit easier and more comfortable. You can always visit us in store to help create the perfect lens tailored for you.
Want to stand out from the rest? Speak to one of our expert team members in store about and we’d be happy to help get a lens tailor made for you.
Varifocal lenses (progressive lenses) are lenses where you have multiple points of focus. This means that the focus changes depending on where you look through the lens. You would normally need this type of lens when you lose your ability to see far and near with a single vision lenses. It is often used for people who are presbyopic.
Presbyopia is the inability for the lens in your eye to change focus when looking from far to near. This is associated with ageing and normally seen in those over 40. It is a natural process which cannot be prevented.
The number on your prescription indicates the power of the lens that you need in order to see to your optimum vision. The sphere number is a measure of how longsighted or shortsighted you are. The CYL number indicates how much astigmatism you have. The axis tells us which angle the astigmatism is in your eye. If you have an “add“ on your prescription, then this is the reading addition that you need in order to see near.
If we do not have your lenses in our store, then depending on the lens that you order we will be able to advise you how long it would take to get the lenses ordered. Most lenses will take up to 1 week. If you are ordering a custom lens, then it can take up to 2 weeks.
Once you have selected the glasses that you would like to make, we place your glasses into a machine that traces the shape of the lens. We then pick out the lens from our stock according to the prescription of your glasses. We then position the centre off the lens in line with where your eye would sit when looking through the glasses. Once the lens is positioned it is then transferred to another machine where the excess parts of the lens is cut off. The lens is then carefully placed into your glasses and then verified.
